One component layer in the thermal bimetal has a low thermal expansion coefficient and is a passive layer; the other component layer has a high thermal expansion coefficient and is an active layer. In some cases, a third or fourth layer of metal or alloy may also be added in order to obtain a thermal bimetal having special properties. Usually, the passive layer is made of invar alloy containing Ni34 ~ 50%; the active layer is made of brass, nickel, Fe-Ni-Cr, Fe-Ni-Mn and Mn-Ni-Cu alloys. Through different combinations of active layer and passive layer materials, different types of thermal bimetals can be obtained, such as high temperature type, medium temperature type, low temperature type, high sensitivity type, corrosion resistance type, resistance type and quick-acting type.
